Rutilated Quartz Pendant in sterling silver setting
Natural rutile has many times the fire shown by the diamond, but it is masked by the red, brown or black body color. Rutile is most commonly seen as rich, reddish brown, needlelike inclusions within quartz or other stones where the rutile crystals create a star efect by reflecting light. (see rutilated quartz). Mined in its pure form, the jagged crystalline bundles are a reddish golden hue.
The name Rutile is derived from the Latin rutilus, meaning red.
