Starry Night

I live in the city, in an older neighborhood lined with mature trees. I very rarely see stars at all and if I do they are few and faded. What a shame for me because the sky – day or night – is one of my favorite parts of creation.

Over Thanksgiving God gave me a rare treat. It was one of the greatest Thanksgivings ever and to top it all off I was given the gift of a starry night. We were in a cabin on a mountain far from any city. We turned off all the lights and sat out on the porch, leaning back and looking up. Wow! Incredible!

This must be what Abraham saw when God took him outside and said to him; “‘Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.’ And He said to him, ‘So shall your descendants be.'” (Genesis 15:5) The sky I saw actually looked crowded and it was amazing to realize that stars nearly touching each other were really light years away.

The whole sky pulsates like this night after night whether anyone sees it or not. Each star is a wonder of God’s creativity and each one has a name. Certainly he is the only one who can count them all. “He counts the number of the stars; He gives names to all of them.” (Psalm 147:4)

Do you feel dullness in your life right now? Is there nothing shiny or brilliant or sparkling? Look up to the heavens. May God give you, like he did me, the gift of a starry night.
